Lathrop State Park

Lathrop State Park is nestled among the piñons and junipers on the prairie west of Walsenburg. Camping here is a real pleasure with the Spanish Peaks making a magnificent background to your activities. There are both electrical and primitive camping sites available. Showers, toilets, laundry facilities and drinking water are also available to campers. There's even a swimming beach at Martin Lake.

Martin Lake and Horseshoe Lake are two different aquatic environments and, for the most part, have different kinds of fish. Horseshoe Lake is crystal clear and wakeless, with tigers, muskies, catfish, largemouth bass, and rainbow trout. Martin Lake is always kind of murky and has trout, walleyes, wipers, crappies, bluegills, catfish, and largemouth bass.

The park’s two lakes offer a variety of boating and angling opportunities for all types of water recreation. Martin Lake offers water skiing, power and sail boating. Because Martin is a warm-water lake, it makes it great for swimmers. Horseshoe Lake is a peaceful haven for canoeists, kayakers, sailors and  other boaters at wakeless speeds. Catfish, bass, walleye, trout and blue gill thrive in both lakes. Horseshoe Lake is known for its large tiger muskies.

Camping opportunities abound at Lathrop. Lathrop’s  two campgrounds  have 103 sites that can accommodate motor homes, trailers and tents, and offer either a basic or improved camping experience.  The  recently upgraded  Pinon Campground is ideal for large camping units.

Lathrop is also the only Colorado State Park with a golf course: the 9-hole Walsenburg Golf Course.
